Frozen Food Packaging

Frozen food is frozen at -30°C after processing and then stored and shipped at -18°C or lower after packaging. Because of the low-temperature cold chain conservation during the whole process, frozen food has the advantages of a long shelf life, but this also puts forward greater challenges and higher requirements for packaging materials.

Because of the characteristics of the frozen product and requirements, some need to be stored frozen at low temperatures, such as frozen fruit, frozen beef and frozen fish. However, while the low temperature environment can inhibit the growth and multiplication of microorganisms, it brings challenges to the sealing and integrity of the packaging during transportation, storage and distribution. Packaging breakage is one of the most common problem with frozen food packaging bags.

It is a known fact that plastics will become fragile and likely to break in low temperature environments. Usually, the cold resistance of plastics is expressed by the crisp temperature. As the temperature decreases, the plastic becomes crisp and brittle due to the reduced activity of the polymer molecular chain. 50% of the plastic will be crispy under the impact strength in cold environment. If the packaging material used for frozen food is poorly resistant to cold, the sharp ridge of frozen food can easily pierce the packaging, which will cause leakage and accelerate the spoiling of the food.
