The world now produces more than 380 million tonnes of plastic every year, which could end up as pollutants, entering our natural environment and oceans.
Plastic waste is one of many types of wastes that take too long to decompose. Normally, plastic items can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in landfills
How much plastic garbage is in the ocean? The numbers are staggering: There are around 12.7 million tonnes per year.
At first, the plastic was invented for material-saving. Because of its durability, in theory it could be used for a long-term. However, the plastic is too cheap and too easy to get, people only use the plastic container for one or two times and threw it away immediately after using. Plus, the plastic is hard to be degraded, not as the kraft paper and wooden cases, the plastic takes about 1,000 years to be degraded. More and more plastic garbage appears and nowhere to go. People have no choice but to burn them, bury them and even threw them into the ocean. Nowadays, the plastic garbage is everywhere, on earth, in the ocean.
Plastic could be recycled, but it is only for virgin plastic. It is very hard to recycle the laminate plastic, especially for the PET and aluminum.
To solve the plastic pollution, many company and organizations get actions. In 2019, Unilever announces ambitious new commitments for a waste-free world. It has confirmed that by 2025 it will:
Halve its use of virgin plastic, by reducing its absolute use of plastic packaging by more than 100,000 tonnes and accelerating its use of recycled plastic.
Help collect and process more plastic packaging than it sells
And it shows us the direction: developing the virgin plastic is the sustainable soulution.
