Flexible Packaging of Tea

Tea is a delicate and environmentally sensitive substance. The primary goal of professional packaging is to resist four key enemies: oxidation, moisture, light, and retaining scent and preventing cross-contamination. Choosing the ideal tea packaging necessitates careful consideration of the tea's qualities, intended price range, brand positioning, and sales channels, finally meeting numerous purposes such as product protection, sales promotion, and cultural dissemination. Whether it's a high-barrier aluminum foil bag or a simple triangle package, the guiding idea is that the best packaging keeps the tea fresh and true to its original state until it reaches the consumer's cup.

What Material Structures are Suitable for Tea Packing Bags?

Tea packaging bags are usually adopted with multilayer Composite Materials structure, as following:

1. Inner Layer (In Direct Contact with Tea):

  • Food-grade Polyethylene (PE): The most commonly used, safe and non-toxic, with excellent heat sealing properties and moisture-proof properties.

  • Polypropylene (PP): Higher hardness, good moisture resistance.

  • Pure Aluminum Foil (AL): Provides absolute barrier (light-blocking, oxygen-blocking, moisture-proof, odor-proof), is the preferred choice for high-end tea, but is usually used in combination with plastic film as it cannot be heat-sealed alone.

2. Middle Layer (Barrier Layer):

  • Aluminum Foil: The gold standard. Even very thin, it can provide an almost perfect barrier.

  • Coated Aluminum Film (VMPET/VMPP): Through vacuum aluminum coating technology, a very thin layer of aluminum is coated on the film, with good barrier properties and better flexibility, and lower cost.

  • Transparent High Barrier Materials (such as EVOH, PA): Used for packaging where "seeing" the tea is required, providing excellent oxygen-blocking properties, but slightly worse light-blocking performance.

3. Outer Layer (Printing and Protection Layer):

  • Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP): Good surface gloss, strong printing adaptability, wear-resistant, moisture-proof.

  • Polyester (PET): High strength, exquisite printing effect.

  • Paper: Often used for outer boxes or gift boxes, with good printing effect and texture, but needs to be combined with the inner bag to achieve protection.

Typical structure examples:

  • Basic moisture-proofing: BOPP/VMPET/PE

  • High-end insulation: PET/AL/PE (corrugated paper/ AL/PE)

  • Transparent display: BOPP/EVOH/PE
